Perplexity SEO

How to get your business cited in Perplexity AI, for owners and marketers adapting to AI search.

Key takeaways
  • Perplexity SEO is optimizing your content so Perplexity AI cites and recommends your business in its answers.
  • Perplexity uses RAG: it retrieves live pages with PerplexityBot, ranks them, and shows citations as the core of every answer.
  • Get cited with authority and freshness, crawler access, conversational Q&A structure, and credible off-site mentions.
  • Citations are the currency: track which queries cite you and grow your citation share over time.

Perplexity SEO is the practice of optimizing your content so Perplexity AI cites and recommends your business in its answers. Because Perplexity shows its sources on every answer, getting cited is the whole game: you optimize to be one of the links Perplexity references when it responds to a user's question.

Perplexity is one generative engine, so Perplexity SEO is an application of generative engine optimization (GEO). This guide explains what Perplexity SEO is, how Perplexity finds and cites sources, a step-by-step playbook to rank in it, and how to track your citation share. For the other engines, see ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.

What is Perplexity SEO?

Perplexity SEO (also called Perplexity AI SEO) is optimizing your website and brand so Perplexity cites you as a source when it answers questions. Perplexity is an AI answer engine that responds conversationally and lists the sources behind every answer, so unlike traditional search, the entire goal is to become one of those visible citations.

How Perplexity finds and cites sources

Perplexity works through retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): when a user asks a question, it retrieves relevant live web pages, ranks them using a mix of semantic similarity (vector embeddings) and keyword relevance signals (like BM25 and TF-IDF), then has its Sonar models generate an answer grounded in those pages and cite them. Its crawler, PerplexityBot, gathers the content it can later retrieve, so being crawlable and authoritative is what gets you into the citation pool.

Is SEO dead? Why Perplexity SEO is GEO

SEO is not dead; it is becoming GEO. Perplexity, like other AI engines, builds its answers from pages that are crawlable, well-structured and trusted, which are the same fundamentals SEO has always rewarded. So Perplexity SEO is not a separate discipline you bolt on; it is generative engine optimization applied to one engine. Keep your SEO foundations and add the citation-focused layer. See the full framework on the GEO pillar.

How to rank in Perplexity

Build topic authority and E-E-A-T

Perplexity cites sources it judges credible, so authority is the foundation. Demonstrate experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) with a real expert author and an about page, go deep on your topic so you are a genuine authority, and earn the backlinks and mentions that signal the wider web trusts you. Depth on a focused topic beats shallow coverage of many.

Let PerplexityBot crawl you (robots.txt and llms.txt)

Perplexity can only cite what it can fetch, so confirm you are not blocking PerplexityBot in robots.txt or meta robots tags. Allow the AI crawlers you want, keep a clean sitemap, and consider adding an llms.txt file to point models at your key pages. We cover crawler access and the file in detail in the llms.txt guide.

Structure content as conversational Q&A

Perplexity users ask full, conversational questions, so write that way. Use the inverted-pyramid structure (answer first, detail after), phrase headings as the questions people ask, keep paragraphs short and self-contained, and add FAQ blocks with FAQPage schema and a clear H2/H3 hierarchy. Content that is easy to retrieve and quote is content that gets cited.

Keep content fresh and cite credible sources

Perplexity favors current, well-sourced information, so freshness is a ranking factor. Update key pages as facts change, show a recent date, and cite credible primary sources yourself, because well-referenced pages read as more trustworthy to both users and the model.

The Reddit and parasite SEO factor

Honestly: Perplexity (and other AI engines) frequently cite user-generated content, especially Reddit, so showing up in relevant, genuine community discussions can earn you mentions. In fact, Reddit's own 2025 lawsuit against Perplexity states Reddit had become the most-cited source in Perplexity's answers (more on that, and why it matters for your strategy, below). So-called "parasite SEO" (publishing on high-authority third-party platforms to ride their trust) can work short-term, but treat it as a supplement, not a strategy. Authentic participation and your own authoritative content are what hold up over time.

Perplexity Pages as a surface

Perplexity Pages let users (and brands) publish shareable, Perplexity-hosted articles on a topic. They are a minor but real surface: a well-made Page on your area of expertise can earn visibility within Perplexity's ecosystem. Useful as a complement, not a substitute for getting your own site cited.

The Reddit lawsuit: why Perplexity's Reddit citations are contested

Reddit is the single most-cited source in Perplexity's answers, which is exactly why it is now at the center of a lawsuit. If your plan leans on Reddit for AI visibility, you should understand what is being fought over.

On October 22, 2025, Reddit, Inc. sued Perplexity AI and three data-scraping firms (Oxylabs, AWMProxy and SerpApi) in federal court in New York. Reddit's core allegation is that, rather than license its data the way Google and OpenAI already do, the defendants harvested Reddit content indirectly by scraping billions of Google search-results pages, while masking their identity and rotating IP addresses to get around Reddit's protections, and that Perplexity then bought and used that scraped data. The lead legal claim is not ordinary copyright, it is DMCA anti-circumvention: the act of bypassing the controls that guard the content.

Two details stand out for SEOs. Reddit says it sent Perplexity a cease-and-desist in May 2024 and that Perplexity's Reddit citations then rose roughly fortyfold. And Reddit claims it set a trap: a test post visible only to Google's crawler that, it says, surfaced inside Perplexity within hours, which Reddit argues proves Perplexity was pulling Reddit content out of Google's search results rather than accessing it through a license or directly.

These are allegations, not proven facts

This is an active case, so treat every claim above as something Reddit alleges, not a settled outcome. Perplexity denies wrongdoing, calls the suit "extortion," and says it simply summarizes and cites Reddit threads and does not train its own models on the data. Reddit filed an amended complaint in February 2026 and the case is still being litigated. There is history here too: in 2024, Wired reporting and an Amazon AWS review questioned whether Perplexity's crawler always respected robots.txt.

What this means for your Perplexity SEO

Two practical lessons. First, the lawsuit confirms what the citation data already showed: Reddit and other user-generated content are the most-cited sources in Perplexity, so genuine presence in relevant Reddit threads and communities really can earn you AI visibility. Second, that supply is now legally contested and increasingly gated behind licensing deals, so do not build your whole strategy on borrowed Reddit authority. Participate authentically where it fits, but make your own crawlable, authoritative site the foundation, because that is the part nobody can sue away or put behind a paywall.

Measuring Perplexity traffic

Measure Perplexity in two layers. First, referral traffic: in GA4, segment sessions whose source is perplexity.ai to see clicks Perplexity sends you. Second, and more important, citation share: how often Perplexity cites you (versus competitors) for your key questions, which referral data alone cannot show because many answers never get a click.

DataWise for Perplexity SEO

The gap in most Perplexity SEO advice is measurement: tactics are easy to list, but almost no one shows you how to track whether they worked. DataWise (free for community members) tracks your Perplexity citation share over time: which queries cite you, how you compare to competitors, and whether your share is growing. That turns Perplexity SEO into a measurable loop instead of a one-time checklist.

If you are weighing a Perplexity SEO agency or done-for-you service, our take is that owners get further learning the repeatable workflow themselves. That is what we teach in the AI Ranking community, alongside the broader AI SEO system.

Perplexity SEO: common questions

What is Perplexity AI SEO?

Perplexity AI SEO is the practice of optimizing your content so Perplexity cites and recommends your business when it answers questions. Because Perplexity shows its sources on every answer, the goal is to become one of those visible citations, which you earn through authority, crawlability, fresh content and clear, extractable structure.

How do you rank or get cited in Perplexity?

Build topic authority and E-E-A-T, make sure PerplexityBot can crawl you, structure content as conversational answer-first Q&A with FAQPage schema, keep it fresh and well-sourced, and earn credible off-site mentions (including on Reddit). Perplexity cites pages it can retrieve, understand and trust, so those signals decide whether you appear.

How does Perplexity find its sources?

Perplexity uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): it retrieves live web pages, ranks them using semantic similarity (vector embeddings) plus keyword signals like BM25, then has its Sonar models generate an answer grounded in those pages and cite them. Its crawler, PerplexityBot, gathers the content it can later retrieve.

Can Perplexity replace Google search?

Perplexity is a strong alternative for research-style questions because it answers directly and shows sources, but it is not replacing Google outright; the two serve overlapping but different needs. For your strategy the point is that Perplexity is a growing surface to be cited on, which is why Perplexity SEO matters now.

Does PerplexityBot need to crawl my site?

Yes. Perplexity can only cite pages it can fetch, so PerplexityBot needs access. Make sure you are not blocking it in robots.txt or meta robots tags, keep a clean sitemap, and consider an llms.txt file pointing to your key pages. If the crawler cannot reach you, you cannot be cited.

Is SEO dead in 2026?

No. SEO is becoming GEO, not dying. Perplexity and other AI engines build answers from pages that are crawlable, well-structured and trusted, the same fundamentals SEO has always rewarded. Keep your SEO foundations and add the citation-focused AI-search layer on top rather than abandoning either.

How do you track your Perplexity citation share?

Combine GA4 referral tracking (segment sessions from perplexity.ai) with citation monitoring that records how often Perplexity cites you versus competitors for your key questions. A tool like DataWise tracks that citation share over time, which referral data alone cannot show because many AI answers never produce a click.

Did Reddit sue Perplexity?

Yes. On October 22, 2025, Reddit sued Perplexity and three data-scraping firms (Oxylabs, AWMProxy and SerpApi) in federal court in New York. Reddit alleges they scraped Reddit content out of Google search results to avoid paying for a license, with DMCA anti-circumvention as the lead claim. Perplexity denies wrongdoing and calls the suit extortion, and the case is still ongoing.

Is it safe to rely on Reddit for Perplexity SEO?

Reddit is the most-cited source in Perplexity answers, so authentic participation in relevant communities can earn you visibility. But that access is now contested in court and increasingly gated behind licensing deals, so treat Reddit as a supplement, not the foundation. Build your own crawlable, authoritative content as the part of your strategy you actually control.
